Diabetes mellitus, commonly known as diabetes, is a chronic disease that affects how our body converts food into energy. When breaking down food, glucose (blood sugar) is produced, which is essential for fueling the body’s cells. However, for glucose to be utilized, the hormone called insulin is necessary.
When someone has diabetes, their body may not produce the right amount of insulin or may simply not use it correctly. As a result, there is an accumulation of glucose in the blood, which, over time, can lead to serious health complications such as heart disease, stroke, blindness, and neuropathies.
Within this disease, there are three main variants:
Type 1 diabetes: This variant is autoimmune and destroys the beta cells of the pancreas, which are responsible for producing insulin. People with this type of diabetes require daily insulin injections.
Type 2 diabetes: This is the most prevalent form. It occurs when the body develops insulin resistance or does not produce the necessary amount. Although it can be controlled with diet and exercise, some patients require medication or insulin.
Gestational diabetes: It appears during pregnancy and usually disappears after childbirth. However, it increases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes later in life.
